Arosa - The Perfect Resort For Families
In the hearth in the Canton of Grisons lies Arosa, a Swiss resort free from any through traffic, sun-spoiled and snow secured. For over 100 years, guests enjoy the many-sided offers in one of the most traditional winter sports places of Switzerland. Arosa is one of the top destinations in Switzerland and one of the highest located resorts of the Alps (1,800 m / 5,904 ft. above sea level). From the better known Swiss Ski Resorts, only Saas Fee Switzerland and St Moritz are located about at the same altitude. It lies in a sheltered basin above the Schanfigg Valley and is the most popular resort in the Grisons after St. Moritz and Davos Switzerland. Like many other Swiss resorts, which are mountain villages, it consists only of one main street called "Poststrasse" lined up with hotels and of course shops. Yet, Arosa has a fairly modern and contemporary look.
Do not compare it to Davos, which is bigger and has an excellent infrastructure nor should you compare it to high-end St. Moritz, which is very ultrachic.
This resort is very family-oriented such as Saas Fee and the hotels that house them tend to be more low-key. Therefore, Arosa attracts the families through such attractions as ski schools for children, tobbogganing, or maybe ice skating.
This classic winter resort has plenty of activities besides skiing and snowboarding. You most certainly will not have to wait in long lift lines and it has relatively reliable snow conditions because of its altitude.
There is also some excellent cross-country skiing for both classic- and free style.
The village of Arosa is actually quite a bit spread-out, which means that some of the hotels or chalets are further away from the ski lifts. Therefore, a free shuttle bus takes you to any lift facility fast. This resort is less suitable for expert skiers as it does not have any real challenging pistes. However, it is the perfect resort for families who are not just thinking about skiing, but want to try other winter sport as well.
Après Ski
Bars & Clubs
After a day of skiing or hiking (in the summer), it is time to head for a drink to the Grand Salon, situated at the Tschuggen Grand hotel. You can enjoy live music every night and they open already at 11:00 am. The "Nosti-Bar" (081378 88 88) which is the oldest bar in Arosa, and the "K.Lounge" are both located in the Kulm Hotel & Alpin Spa. Some of the other bars & night clubs on the high-end scale are the "Crazy Night Club" (081 377 13 13), the Galaxy (081 378 88 88), the Edenbar & Lounge (081 378 71 00) or the Bar/Dancing at the Sporthotel Valsana (081 378 63 63).
Restaurants There are few Gourmet Chefs in Switzerland that are better than Gerd Reber. You may want to visit the outstanding art cuisine from the restaurant "Kachelofa-Stübli" (081 378 55 55). What would a 5-star hotel be without an excellent cuisine? The restaurant "La Vetta" (081 378 99 99) is located at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel with Executive Chef Ulf Wein and his brigade of 23 cooks and 10 sous-cooks. The restaurant "Arvenstube" (081 378 52 50) which is located at the hotel "Arve Central" (sorry it is only a 3-star hotel) has a good gourmet cuisine, but is rated a bit lower.
Hotels in Arosa
The first address for pure luxury is the Tschuggen Grand Hotel (081 378 99 99). It is very exclusive in a magnificent location and a member of the "Leading Hotels of the World". The "Tschuggen Bergoase", the hotel Spa, has become very popular with its spectacular architecture from famous architect Mario Botta. The hotel has its own mountain railway, the Tschuggen Coaster, which takes you to the Arosa skiing area in just three minutes. Another 5-star hotel is the Arosa Kulm & Alpin Spa (081 378 88 88) which was remodeled recently. However, the hotel is not as modern as the Tschuggen, but includes a beautiful Alpin Spa for your physical and spiritual well-being. The resort has some very appealing 4-star hotels as an alternative. First choice are the Sporthotel Valsana (081 378 63 63) or the Waldhotel National (081 378 55 55). Less high in the ranking are the Hotel Cristallo (081 378 68 68), the Sunstar Parkhotel (081 378 77 77), the Belarosa Hotel (081 378 89 99) or the Hotel Excelsior (081 378 47 47).
