Art Basel – The Best Museum for Contemporary Art

Impressive art at Art Basel Every year in June, Art Basel will display the work of artists from all over the world in Basel, Switzerland. It is regarded as one of the most important and certainly the world’s largest and most prestigious art fair for modern and contemporary art.

Almost 300 carefully selected exhibitors are attending the art fair every year with their best

offerings. Many more are on the waiting list and wished they could attend. Although exact figures are not known, it is estimated that between 250 – 300 million is bought by art dealers and museums.

The 250 best selected galleries from Europe, America, Australia and Asia show you as an art lover high quality modern and contemporary art works.

The event at a sprawling exhibition center will take place in two spacious halls. It will feature solo shows by artists like Los Angeles based Kelly Nipper or up-and-coming Glasgow-based Duncan Campbell, gallery exhibitions, conversation panels and art magazine displays.

On show are also sculptures, contemporary art paintings, photographs, prints, installations, video and multimedia art as well as performances by more than 1,000 famous artists. All well-known names are represented from modern and contemporary masters like Picasso, Miró, Warhol, Klee and Beuys to the newest generation.

Art Basel – The Place for High-End Socializing

It used to be that private collectors, dealers and exhibiting artists showed up in Basel the night before the fair´s invitation only preview day. But times have changed and the core of the art industry has begun to arrive in Basel days ahead. This way they can pursue the high-end socializing that is foreplay to buying before the public or even V.I.P. have a chance to inspect the art on offer. Besides, it is a change from running around all day in the different halls.

Creepy Animals shown at Art Basel Art Basel, like the White Turf Events in St. Moritz, is still a place to see and be seen. The Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich who is attending just about every year always purses a booth. So did museum directors like Alfred Pacquement of the Pompidou Center in Paris or Glenn D. Lowry of the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Some of the artists regularly spotted were Ellsworth Kelly, Lawrence Weiner, Takashi Murakami or Tony Oursler. Some years, even Hollywood stars that enjoy contem-
porary art very much like Brad Pitt or the director Sofia Coppola are attending. Fair officials noticed lately, that there are more buyers from the Middle East and Russia but fewer American collectors.

Anyway, the high quality and the wide variety as well as the international participation have brought Art Basel an unequalled reputation. No wonder more than 50,000 artists, gallery owners, museum directors, private collectors and other art lovers gather together every year. I guess you can call it the "annual family reunion of the art world".

Basel – City of The Fine Arts

The city of Basel is a European cultural centre. There are almost 40 museums such as the world famous "Beyeler Foundation", the "museum of art" as well as the Basel theatre staging plays, countless galleries, operas and ballets, over 40 cinemas, music stages of all sizes as well as 25 more small theatres all contributing to a rich cultural life. The city ranks with the European élite for fine arts by hosting Art Basel which has become the world’s leading contemporary art fair.

Art is held in high regard and it is not only the museums and galleries that show a wide range of art. In the small city of Basel, art is also shown in many public areas like the "Jonathan Borofskys hammering Man", a steel and aluminum giant of 13,4 meters standing on Aeschenplatz. Another impressing work is from Richard Serra, a massive sculpture on the intersection at the theatre square and the fountain by Jean Tinguely right beside it. But of course, the highlight of the art scene is Art Basel, the world’s biggest art fair.

The art fair takes place annually from mid June for five days. The opening hours for invited guests are from 11 am until 9 pm and for the general public from 11 am to 7 pm.
