The Basel University was founded in 1460. It can pride itself on a tradition of almost five hundred and fifty years of excellence in teaching, learning and research. In fact, 2010 is a special year for the University of Basel. She celebrates its 550 years and is therefore the oldest University of Switzerland.

These seven faculties have a teaching staff of 1,141 of whom about 197 are women professors. The Basel University, rather small in size, has just over 11,000 students enrolled. Over the last few years, there were almost twice as many students registered in the philosophical historical faculty than for example at the philosophical natural sciences or the medicine faculty. This is the case at many other Universities in Switzerland.

Nano Scale Science – In the world of atoms and molecules merge the classical disciplines of physics, biology and chemistry. The NCCR “Nanoscale Science” focuses on impulse for life sciences, sustainability as well as information and communication technologies. Iconic Criticism – The digital revolution has unfolded its global dynamics since the beginning of the nineties. It makes from the old, sluggish picture an extremely flexible instrument. Even in the modern science, pictures have become an essential research tool. The question of the picture, its power of knowledge, its power and effect is the core theme of “Iconic Criticism”. SESAM – The national research focus SESAM was launched in 2005. The aim of the project was to better understand the causes and development of mental health. The detection of relationships between socio-economic conditions, genetically biological facilities, pregnancy history, psychological factors in parents and grandparents and the long-term development (biologically, socially, psychologically of the child has formed this focus.
Tuition fees
The University of Basel charges tuition fees in accordance with its official Fees Regulations. • The current tuition fees are CHF 700.- per academic semester. • In accordance with § 27 of the University’s official Student Administration Regulations, reduced fees of CHF 150.- apply to students who have been granted a leave of absence, medical students on their placement year, and doctoral students. • Students are advised that there is an administrative charge of CHF 50.- for late semester registration. • Doctoral students enrolled in a postgraduate program are liable to pay a fee of CHF 550.- in addition to the reduced fees of CHF 150.- applicable to doctoral students. (The University is currently developing several postgraduate programs). • In applying for admission to the University of Basel, all applicants are charged an administrative fee of CHF 100.-. In case of late application (if approved) an additional fee of CHF 150.- is payable. • Members of the general public registering for courses open to them are charged CHF 50.- for each weekly semester hour of tuition. Where registration amounts to fourteen hours or more, the overall charge is CHF 700.-.
Principles for recognition of foreign qualification certificates
The enrolment for a bachelor’s degree requires a recognized secondary school certificate or any other equivalent degree. The assessment of foreign diplomas takes place in accordance of the Plenary assembly of the conference of Rectors of Swiss Universities (September 7th, 2007). Foreign education certificates only are recognized if the following conditions are met…
1) Essentially correspond to a Swiss secondary school certificate. 2) Represent in the issuing country the highest middle school or high school degree. 3) Allow assess to all university faculties and degree programs in the issuing country. 4) Can prove an entire school term of at least 11 years (of which at least three years training is at the secondary level). 5) Have been acquired in an unabridged und usually in school groups completed training course.
The costs for foreigners studying in Basel are actually low in compare to other international universities. There is talk that the fees are going to rise because most universities in Switzerland have to many foreign students enrolled. However, the costs for living expenses may be higher than in other countries.
