Bettmeralp – A Truly Unique Swiss Resort

Bettmeralp, the small mountain village may not nearly have the name of the famous Valais ski resorts like Crans-Montana, Verbier and Zermatt. That is because the village has always remained an alp. Yet today, it is not anymore an unknown mountain pasture. It has become the largest hiking paradise in the Alps. Moreover, this ski resort also has excellent ski slopes ranging from beginners to experts.

The village of Bettmeralp has a
lot of charm and is an ideal place to discover. The family-friendly winter and summer holiday resort boasts close to 300 sun days a year. In fact, the Valais region where we live is one of the sunniest places in Switzerland.

It is located on a plateau with a perfect view to many of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps. On most days, you can admire in the distance the Weissmies, Dom, Weisshorn-Mischabel and the world famous Matterhorn. When it is snowing, you get just such an amazing view of the Rhone valley below, especially at night when the lights are on.

The longest glacier in Europe

There are few sights in Europe more impressive than the massive Aletsch glacier. This UNESCO world heritage site stretches for 23km from the Jungfrau to the Aletschwald. It is the longest glacier in Europe covering 86 sq kms and estimated to weigh 27 billion tonnes. Below that huge ice mass is Bettmeralp which is nestled within pine and larch forests and surrounded by a stunning diversity of flora and wildlife.

Accommodation in Bettmeralp is available to suit most tastes.

You have a choice to stay in either a chalet-like constructed hotel, self-catering holiday apartment or in a beautiful Swiss chalet.

You will not find any 5-star hotels because this resort is not geared for high-end clients.

However, a good 4-star hotel is La Cabane and of course there are many 3-star hotels available. Therefore, Bettmeralp is not considered as one of the best Swiss ski resorts.

Dining out

The culinary art is based mostly on delicious traditional Valais specialties. Among the best known are Raclette and cheese fondue but also air-dried meat and the famous spicy sausages. Just make sure you do not undertake any strenuous activities after a cheese fondue.

Of course, you can also enjoy a vast offer of culinary delights, ranging from other simple local dishes to exquisite gourmet meals. Make sure you try a glass of the famous wine that is growing in the Valais region – like the Fendant or Dole.

Enjoying a holiday in a beautiful village

Accordingly well developed is the infrastructure with a wide offer of summer and winter sports activities, cultural – and entertainment occasions.

The resort maintains 35 km (22 miles) of ski slopes with 12 ski lifts and aerial cable cars. The local Swiss Snow Sports School with more than 40 instructors available offers you ski lessons and childcare options if needed.

The resorts of Bettmeralp
and Riederalp are an Eldorado for winter hikers and snow shoe enthusiasts. The "Globaltrail" connects those two resorts. Along the two-hour route, comfortable restaurants and cafés invite you to a visit.

You will also have access to a 5 km (3 miles) cross-country ski track to enjoy in either the classic or the skating technique. Right beside it, you find 72 km (44,7 miles) of perfectly prepared walking trails and 8 km (5 miles) of marked snow shoe trails surrounded with a beautiful panorama.

Bettmeralp maintains a sports centre that is open in the winter as well as in the summer. It offers two indoor tennis courts, an indoor swimming pool with a large slide, a children’s play pool, a gym, solarium, sauna and a bowling centre.

Outside the sports complex, you also have access to a fitness trail, tennis courts, a natural skating rink, tobogganing miniature golf, and a children’s playground. During the summer and fall, you may want to go swimming or fishing in crystal-clear Lake Bettmer close by.

The resort really makes the effort and organizes fascinating slide shows and concerts as well as different animation programs. If you enjoy hiking, why not take an alpine- and hiking tour on the Aletsch glacier.

The entire Aletsch region, which includes also Riederalp and Fischeralp, boasts over 100 km (60 miles) of ski slopes and 30 lift facilities. The Valais region has many top ski resorts. It makes sense to try other ski slopes close by for a day trip. I recommend you Saas Fee, Zermatt, Leukerbad or Fiesch easily reachable by car, train or bus.

How to get to Bettmeralp

By car

From Northern Switzerland: Take the A6 highway from Basel or Zurich Berne – Thun – Spiez. Exit the highway in Spiez and take the main road to Kandersteg (car transport via Lötschberg tunnel) – Goppenstein – Gampel and on to Brig – Betten.

From Western Switzerland: Take the A9 highway from Geneva – Lausanne – Vevey or from Northern Switzerland: Take the A12 highway Berne to Vevey and then A9 highway to Sierre. Exit the highway and take the main road to Brig – Betten.

From Eastern and Central Switzerland: Andermatt – Realp (Matterhorn Gotthard Bahn car transport or in the summer over the Furka pass) to Oberwald and on to Betten.

From the South (Canton of Ticino): During the summer, it is possible to drive from Lugano to Airolo – Nufenen Pass – Ulrichen and on to Betten. In the wintertime, use the car transport via the Simpon tunnel, which starts in Iselle on the Italian side.

From Italy: If you are driving from Milan, use the E62 highway to Domodossola – Iselle (car transport via the Simpon tunnel) – Brig and on to Betten.

When coming from the south-west: Aosta – Grand Saint Bernard tunnel (in the summer over pass) – Martigny: A9 highway – Sierre. Exit Sierre and use the main road to Brig and on to Betten. You can park your car in Betten and then use the aerial cable car, which takes you in 6 minutes up to the resort.

By train

Use the train from Geneva, Basel, Zurich, Berne, Milan or Germany without a change directly to Brig. From there you change the train for Betten (approx. 12 km or 7,5 miles). From Betten, a large cable car carries you and your luggage gently to the resort. From the station, a snow cat picks you up in the winter and an electro bus in the summer directly to your hotel or chalet.

Note: Bettmeralp is indeed an ideal place to spend a holiday with your family or with a group of friends. Even if it is a small resort without all the glamour that many high-end destinations in Switzerland provide, you should discover this truly pretty place.
