Chateau de Chillon... The Most Visited Swiss Castle
A visit to the Chateau de Chillon - the Chillon Castle - which was built between the 10th and 12th centuries is a must for every visitor to Switzerland. This castle is located on the Swiss Riviera on the shores of Lac Léman close to the city of Lausanne Switzerland. It served as a tollhouse for many centuries and played an important role during many disputes. It is one of those perfectly maintained Swiss castles and by far the most visited castle in Switzerland. The original constructions however are already dating back before the year 1000. The owners were first the bishops from the city of Sion Switzerland, later the house of Savoyen from the 12th century, then the people from the Canton of Berne from 1536 to 1798 and the Canton of Waadt since its independency in 1798. The origin of the famous poem from Lord BYRON "the prisoner of Chillon" in 1816 was the detention of François BONIVARD in prison from 1530 until 1536.
The Château de Chillon was renovated and extended in the 13th century on a rocky small island. Today it holds many collections of furniture, tin, old weapons and artifacts which were uncovered with excavations on location.
The very well-preserved facilities are open to the public daily from:
Mar to Oct from 09.30am - 6.00pm Jan to Feb from 10.00am - 5.00pm Nov to Dec from 10.00am - 5.00pm
