Davos Switzerland - The Winter Sports Metropolis And Eldorado of Switzerland


Davos Switzerland, the highest located town in Europe  Davos Switzerland is the highest located town in Europe, embedded in a unique mountain landscape. It is the Winter Sports Metropolis and Eldorado for snowboard and downhill skiers, cross-country skiers, ice sportsmen, winter hikers and people who enjoy pleasure.

The resort is also the Congress Centre of the annual World Economic Forum, a meeting where political and business leaders aim to create a foremost global partnership.

This snow sport region unites five areas to a unique winter sports arena. They are -- Parsenn/Gotschna, Jakobshorn, Rinerhorn, Pischa, and Madrisa. You will also discover over 300 km (190 miles) of excellently prepared pistes to all degrees of difficulty and more than 50 ski lifts and gondolas. The Parsenn area is the most popular and the largest of all ski sectors and is linked to the ski resort of Klosters. On the other side of town, the Jakobshorn is popular with snow boarders.

The resort of Klosters located close to Davos Switzerland is a favorite by the British royal family, especially Prince Charles who comes here regularly for more than 20 years.

Davos Switzerland is a popular place for cross-country skiers. In fact, the best cross-country skiers compete annually in mid December in Davos nordic skiing World Cup races. Their extensive trail system covers more than 75 km (47 miles). It is also an ice-sports paradise for both serious skaters as well as for spectators.

Besides ice-skating, the town offers ice speed skating, ice hockey, curling, and ice stick shooting from July to April. During Christmas/New Year, this mountain town is hosting the prestigious Spengler Cup, an ice hockey tournament. In February, the Ice Gala presents excellent figure skating as an exciting, family-friendly entertainment.

Davos Switzerland in the summer This resort is actually the cradle of sledging as an international sport. In 1883, the first official sledge race was held here. There are of course many more outdoor sports to enjoy.

Try snowshoe trekking, tobogganing or winter walking in the snow, paragliding, hang-gliding or simply horse drawn excursions around the town.

Bars & Clubs

The Davos nightlife is very entertaining with lots of bars & clubs in the resort. The choice is endless, whether in a traditional Alpine hut, a rustic fondue "Stübli" or a in a luxury gourmet temple.

After a day of Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, or skating, it is off to visit the cinema, concert, or the theatre. Afterward, you will find more entertainment on tap in romantic piano bars, clubs, and other bars full of international flair.

How about a visit to the Carigiet-Bar located at the Steigenberger Hotel Belvédère. There are of course other places for entertainment or just simply to meet people like the Piano-Bar Tonic at the Hotel Europe, Carlo's Café Américain, Blue Note Bar, Bar La Onda, Cabanna Club, Central Pianobar, Chämi Bar and many more.



Davos Dining

The best gourmet restaurant is not located in Davos but in the town of Klosters nearby. The Walserhof (081/410 29 29) very comfortable and rustic is rated with 18 points by the Gault Millau guide. The gourmet chef and owner Beat Bolliger and sommelier Herbert Moser will spoil you according to your wishes.

Good but not top are the restaurants Pöstli (081/415 45 00) located in the Morosani Posthotel, the restaurant Flüela-Stübli (081/410 17 17), and Mann & Co (081/415 15 15). In addition, to mention is the restaurant Allegra located in the hotel Arabella Sheraton Waldhuus. However, the menu card offers international and regional specialties but is a bit limited with not to many choices.



Hotels in Davos

Located right after the convention centre, lies the deluxe Hotel Steigenberger Belvédère. The high-end Hotel Flüela, which is located in Davos Dorf, is a little cheaper. However, both are actually quite cheap as 5-star hotels and the rooms and suites are between 220 - 350 Swiss francs.

Other good 4-star+ are the Hotel Sunstar Park, Hotel Morosani Schweizerhof, ArabellaSheraton Hotel Waldhuus, Waldhotel, and the ArabellaSheraton Hotel Seehof all situated in Davos Dorf.



How to get to Davos Switzerland

Arrival by Train

All trains run through Landquart with the Inter City or Euro City. From Landquart, the regional train takes you to the resort. Traveling time from Zurich Switzerland is about 2 hrs. 20 min., from Basel 3 hrs. 30 min., and from Geneva Switzerland 5 hrs. 20 min. Arrival by Car

You will find your way easily by taking the highway to Lanquart in the direction of Chur Switzerland. Driving from Chur up to Landquart and on to Davos through this beautiful Alpine landscape will get you already into vacation mood. Depending on road conditions during the winter, you may need tire chains.

Arrival by Plane

Book a flight with any airline to Zurich International Airport. From there you have the option to continue by train or to rent a car. There is also a bus shuttle service leaving from Zurich Airport every Saturday from December - Eastern called the Davos Express.

If you plan on flying in with your private or business jet, do not use Zurich International Airport, rather head to the regional airport of Altenrhein. It is the fastest and most efficient way to get not only to Davos but also to other resorts in that region like St Moritz, Flims, Arosa, and Laax.
