Glacier Express... The Most Spectacular Swiss Rail Travel Voyage
Why not take a Panoramic train trip on the Glacier Express from St. Moritz or Chur Switzerland to Zermatt through the Grand Canyon of Switzerland. This breathtakingly scenic journey lasts 7:30 hours passing through Alpine heartland crossing 291 bridges and through 91 tunnels and over the Oberalp Pass at 2032 meters (6,669 feet). It is the looking out to nature what people enjoy. Just sit back with a glass of wine or champagne in your hand and watch the scenery pass by - and discover this interesting Swiss rail travel journey. Last year - in 2005 - the legendary Glacier Express was celebrating its 75th anniversary. Each year more than 250,000 people take the route from St Moritz to Zermatt or vice versa. It is called the slowest express train in the world. It has to be with about 180 miles through rugged Alpine landscapes.
On your way you will not only discover the diverse physical landscape but also the cultural and linguistic one. You travel through various cantons like the Valais, Uri and the Grisons. And you get to hear German, Italian, Romansh, French and many different dialects. You will notice the distinctly changing architecture as well.
Do get your camera ready to take pictures because you will see green valleys with grazing cows. In the valley of Goms pretty villages or castles perched along the Domleschg ridge. The small town of Brig as one of the most picturesque, and the Matterhorn, probably the most photographed mountain in the world. This is an all day trip so therefore eating is important too - that's the easy part. The waiters will serve you meals prepared from scratch in a kitchen car. You will be dining in the historic Gourmino dining car or the Jumbo, the world's longest dining car, depending on the train. Don't expect to drink or eat out of plastic dishes.
Dining on white tablecloths and porcelain dishes with fresh flowers on the table while having a conversation with your neighbor and watching the pretty scenery is one of life's little luxuries. Trolleys with refreshment pass through the train throughout your voyage as well.
In Switzerland we drink sometimes schnapps or grappa. Even if you don't usually drink this 40° liqueurs, you will want to order one on the Glacier Express just to see how the waiter serves it. He holds the bottle high above his head and pours the schnapps with a flourish into the small glass, without spilling a drop. It is not that easy on a moving train in the mountains.
