Grand Hotel Zermatterhof - At The Foot Of The Matterhorn

Location

The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof is located in Southern Switzerland at the end of the narrow Mattertal Valley. It is not just a top Zermatt hotel, but one of the best Swiss hotels that lies at an altitude of 1,650 m (5,413 feet) with a magnificent view to the Matterhorn.

Transportation
the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof in Zermatt Switzerland Traveling by air

The quickest way to get to Zermatt Switzerland is by air, to be more precise by helicopter. There is a heliport located at the entrance of town.

Most helicopter operators in Switzerland pick-up guests directly from the following airports: Geneva, Zurich/Kloten, Basel/Mulhouse, Bern/Belp, Lugano and the closest of all, from Sion airport.

Many wealthy Russian and English high-end guests, who are choosing Zermatt for a vacation, fly by private jet directly to Sion Airport. From there a helicopter takes them to the heliport of Zermatt.

Traveling by train

From Geneva International Airport, take the Intercity to Visp or Brig (because not all Intercity trains stop in Visp), change to narrow-gauge railroad Brig-Visp-Zermatt. (4 hours Geneva-Cointrin Airport )

From Basel, Zurich Switzerland, Bern, the capital of Switzerland or Milan, take the Intercity to Brig, (Note: From January 2008, you will have direct access to Visp via the "Lötschberg tunnel" and gain 1 hour) change to narrow-gauge railroad Brig-Visp-Zermatt. (5 hours from Zurich/Kloten and 31/2 hours from Milan-Malpensa

From Chur or St Moritz in the Engadin, take the Glacier Express to Zermatt. (Note: Taking the Glacier Express from St. Moritz takes about 71/2 hours, but you will experience one of the most spectacular train journeys you can imagine).

Traveling by car

Private vehicles do not have access to Zermatt! You may leave your car at the parking lot in Täsch (5km/3miles before Zermatt). From there the hotel organizes your transfer to Zermatt by taxi or by train (every 20 minutes, last train from Täsch at 23:30). They also arrange a pick-up from the train station and take you to the hotel by horse-drawn carriage or electric car.

Room Information

The rustic suites at the Zermatterhof The balcony views from most of the rooms to the Matterhorn, probably the most famous mountain in the world is just spectacular.

The 84 guest rooms, including 26 suites have recently been completely refurbished. All rooms and suites offer high comfort with lots of space and vary quite a bit in decorative style.

Some are in the rustic Swiss tradition, some are festooned in florals and some could even be described as cozy with wooden canopied beds. The majority of the rooms also include a balcony with views of the Monte Rosa Massive or the majestic Matterhorn.

In Room Amenities

Every room and suite at Grand Hotel Zermatterhof offer Multimedia TV - Radio - Direct-Dial Telephone - Internet Connection - Safe - Data Port - Minibar - Hairdryer - Jacuzzi (in some rooms) and (upon request) Video.

The hotel offers an indoor pool, whirlpool, gym, sauna and steam bath, Alpine- and ice grotto, massages, treatments, game room, 24-hour reception and more. Six conference rooms are available with modern technology such as video conferencing, big wall projections of data and images.

Dining & Entertainment

The restaurant staff at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof The Grand Hotel Zermatterhof has just two restaurants (Prato Borni and Lusi) and two small bars (Stars Bar and Rudenbar), so it is a bit limited at the hotel.

However, the town has many good to excellent restaurants and countless bars.

A few restaurants that I highly recommend are:

Restaurant Le Gourmet (Hotel Alpenhof)
Matterstrasse 43, Zermatt
Tel: +41 (0)27 966 55 55

Sport & Leisure Facilities at the property or nearby

Zermatt is a world-class ski resort and I am sure when it comes to sports, you will not get bored. So do not go to Zermatt if you want to visit art galleries and many museums. Anyway, Zermatt’s only two museums are the "Alpine Museum" and the new Matterhorn Museum is worth a visit.

Winter activities

There are many sports & activities to participate outside the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof. Zermatt has excellent skiing/snowboarding and 175 - 200 ski instructors are available to teach all levels. Other sports are Curling - Cross-Country Skiing - Ice Skating - Paragliding - Ice Driving - Ice Climbing - Indoor Climbing - Indoor Tennis - Sleigh Rides - Snow Bikes - Squash - Swimming - Tobogganing and much more.

Summer activities

Golf (in Randa / Täsch) - Summer Skiing - Mountain Climbing - Hiking - Tennis - Squash - Mountain Biking - Mule Trekking - Bowling and Glacier Excursions.

High-End Travel Switzerland's Review

Many Swiss Hotels at other locations like St. Moritz or Gstaad are bragging about the Celebrities and the High Society they accommodate. Not so the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof, which is still one of the few true "Grand Hotels" left. It is very discreet about their visiting high-end guests and so is every hotel in Zermatt. In fact, Celebrities and Royalties very often check in under a false name so that they are not recognized. Somehow, they all get surprised that there are no paparazzi in town.

Arriving at the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof in the car-free Alpine village of Zermatt is also a special experience no matter what the season. The hotel's elegant pale blue carriage picks you up at the train station and high-end guests directly from the heliport. However, if there is a lot of snow, a two-horse open sleigh picks you up - Quite romantic!

The maître d'hôtel in the dining room still wears a tailcoat and accompanies you to the noble glass dome. You see many guests still dress in jacket and tie, but not as often as in the 80's or 90's. Like in most of the Luxury Swiss Hotels, the staff at the Zermatterhof is multilingual and eager to accommodate special requests. They can arrange a perfect excursion to the 3,089 m high Gornergrat, to the Hörnlihütte at the foot of the Matterhorn or a spectacular sightseeing flight around the Matterhorn.

One tip: Visit the Ice Palace, the highest Glacier Grotto in the world (3,820m - 12,532 feet). The Matterhorn-Express and two other cable cars will take you right up to the Ice Palace. Therefore, if you want to relax, get an overdose of fresh mountain air and leave the daily stress behind you for a week or two, then the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof is just right for you.
