Jungfrau Region - The Taj-Mahal of The Winter Sport Areas
The Jungfrau Region is one of the oldest Alpine tourist destinations of the world. It is also one of the first regions, which in 1916 built a railway to the top of the Jungfraujoch. The train station located at 3,471 metres above sea level is still the highest of Europe.
The Resort of Mürren
Mürren sits on top of a ledge high above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in the Bernese Oberland and is accessible only by cable car. The journey is well worth it, as the views of the Jungfrau Region are stunning. The accommodation is in typical Swiss Alpine style and there is no traffic or congestion, because Mürren is car-free.
Mürren in the Bernese Oberland
Rather expensive, this mountain village is close to the slopes of the Schilthorn. It is one of the most challenging skiing areas of Switzerland, which is frequented especially by experienced skiers. If you can afford it and are capable to ski the steep slopes, this beautiful resort may be for you as it offers some of the finest powder snow in Europe. Above the resort of Mürren, a 32 minutes ride on an aerial cable car takes you to the summit of the 2,970 m high Schilthorn. From there, you will have spectacular views of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (UNESCO World Heritage) and on more than 200 other summits. It is a fantastic place to stop and have a delicious meal at the world’s first revolving restaurant, the "Piz Gloria". Later on, follow the tracks of James Bond in the Touristorama where you can see extracts of the 007 movie "On Her Majesty’s Secret Service", which was filmed at the Schilthorn.
Hotels in Mürren Both resorts Mürren as well as Wengen do not provide any 5-Star hotel accommodation. There are of course plenty of good 3-star hotels as well as beautiful chalets to enjoy a perfect vacation. However, if you are looking for a resort with high-end accommodation in the Jungfrau Region, discover Grindelwald or luxurious Gstaad.
Hotel Eiger This family-run 4-star hotel boasts a picturesque setting close to the resort centre. The comfort establishment offers high-standard accommodation in spacious guest rooms, suites and apartments. The wellness area features a sauna, Jacuzzi and indoor swimming pool. The hotel has an excellent stylish restaurant.
The Resort of Wengen
Wengen is located on a sunny, sheltered plateau at the foot of the famous Jungfrau Mountain. As a charming and friendly village, Wengen has a traditional Alpine character. Like Mürren, Wengen is car-free and everyone and everything arrives here by the mountain railway. Skiers of all grades will delight in the two main ski areas, Kleine Scheidegg, reached by mountain railway, and Männlichen, reached by a cable car.
Wengen, home of the world longest worldcup downhill ski race
Nevertheless, these mega-tourism spots are secondary to all those who already once were skiing or snowboarding here. The Jungfrau Region with its three ski resorts for the price of one, has something for every winter sports fan. For the freestylers, it has various freestyle parks. If you are a downhill skier, you can ski the most legendary ski descent on the World Cup Ski Circuit – The Lauberhorn Downhill Ski Race. It is without a doubt the top winter sport event in the Jungfrau Region. For off piste skiers, there are countless possibilities in the middle of the mighty four-thousanders. The main ski area shared with Grindelwald is the Kleine Scheidegg. From Wengen, a cog railway takes you to Wengeneralp in about 25 minutes. Sometimes, it may also be busy with non-skiing tourists on their way to the Jungfraujoch. The second main ski area is Männlichen, reached by a cable-car from the village or accessed from the Kleine Scheidegg. There are more than 35 mountain restaurants as well as half a dozen snow bars on the pistes. The Jungfrau Region offers more than 213 km of piste and there is more and more every year.

It is probably the best 4-star hotel in the Jungfrau Region.
Other Winter Sports
The Jungfrau Region with Grindelwald, Wengen and Muerren is also one of the most attractive regions for non-skiers. Grindelwald is best known for its toboggan run. It is the longest in Europe with 57 km and according to a vote of snow friends, it is also the best toboggan run in the world. If the toboggan adventure does not kick enough adrenaline, you may want to try the "First Flyer". It is a kind of chair lift, but it does not go upwards but races downwards. You will race down the hill at nearly 90 kilometres an hour during 45 seconds - an unbelievable adrenalines boost. If after reading this, your heart starts beating much higher, you may have to change to a safer sport. How about cross-country skiing? This sport is hard on the rise again, especially by trendy young people who have enough of Après-Ski on the slopes and are looking for peace in the loneliness of the forests. Snow tubing is far away from this popularity. Modern snow tubes are like large truck inner tubes. You sit inside and just follow the snow canal while rotating and sliding around like a drunken bob sleigh driver. It is not dangerous at all and especially lots of fun for the children. In fact, it makes so much fun, that most will slide for hours.
Après-Ski in Wengen and Mürren
Both resorts are probably not your choice if you put partying before skiing. Nonetheless, both Wengen and Mürren have enough lively bars and nightspots for your taste. After the lifts close, the pavement cafes located around the station in Wengen are generally crowded. A good place to start is at the Belvedere and the Silberhorn. Later on in the evening, you may want to visit the lively bars "Tanne and the Pickle". There are also a number of discothèques to spend the nights rather than going skiing the next day. Après-Ski in Mürren is usually cosy and relaxed with most of the hotels offering traditional Stubli bars. Right after skiing, many visit the "Cake Stop" at the Bellevue. Later on, you may want to stop by at the Tächi Bar and the Inferno or if you are a night owl, the Biemli Chäller with lively music through the night.
