Saas Fee Switzerland - The Pearl of The Alps

Saas Fee Switzerland surrounded by the Swiss Alps The resort of Saas Fee Switzerland is on the opposite side of the mountain range where Zermatt lies. The village of Stalden divides the two valleys. On your left, you enter the valley on your way to Saas Fee and on the right to the valley of Zermatt on your way to Zermatt.

Both resorts are in fierce competition with each other and try to outdo themselves regularly. My personal view is this resort is prettier, more open spaced and is less crowded than Zermatt. It is not as famous as its neighbor is, but it is a paradise for families as well as for the younger people.

Tobogganing in Saas Fee Switzerland This mountain village is one-step down from the opulence of the Swiss Ski resorts like St Moritz, Zermatt, or Gstaad, but it is right behind in providing an authentic mountain village feel.

This comes as no surprise, because this village is not marketing for millions of Swiss francs to get the wealthy and famous, as its neighbor does. The infrastructure may not be the newest, which will probably not affect you much unless you want nothing else than skiing.

Hiking high above the resort of Saas Fee Switzerland Thirteen peaks all higher than 4,000 m (13,123 ft) and over-hanging glaciers surround the mountain resort.

The location in the middle of the highest mountains of the Alps gives the car free glacier village his unmistakable name "Pearl of the Alps".

Unlike the resort of Crans-Montana, it has maintained its typical old wooden houses that invite you to a romantic winter vacation. The resort lies at 1,800 m (5,905 ft) and therefore guarantees absolute snow security. On 145 km (90 miles) of pistes, everybody comes at their expense.

The largest ice pavilion in the Allalin ski area above Saas Fee Switzerland While the beginners practice skiing in the village, the free-stylers can enjoy themselves in the snow parks and the carvers on the delightfully wide glacier pistes.

By the way -- the fun on the pistes is also in the summer an experience -- of course on the glacier.

Saas Fee Switzerland hosts the biggest and highest ice pavilion in the world with over 5,500 m3. Just take the cable car up to the Allalin ski area that is located at 3,500 m (11,482 ft) and you experience unique panorama views. Also unique and in the same area is the world's highest revolving restaurant from where you see the surrounding mountain and glacier scenery. Just do not forget to order a glass of hot red wine, a local specialty.

Après Ski

Nightlife

By far the best bar for the high-end clientele in Saas Fee Switzerland is the Vernissage (027/ 958 19 00) which includes also a restaurant, and a lounge. The local artist Heinz Julen designed the concept of the bar. There is nothing special about the rest of the bars, and pubs of this resort.

You may want to try Nesti's Ski Bar (027/957 42 11), Vinarium (027/958 75 75) at Hotel Schweizerhof, Poison (027/957 50 51) or the Happy Bar (027/957 38 96).

Restaurants in Saas Fee

There are around 44 restaurants in Saas Fee Switzerland with a wide choice ranging from simple meals to Valaisan specialties and gourmet menus. One restaurant that I highly recommend is the Fletschhorn (027/957 21 31). This fine restaurant under Chef Markus Neff is listed top in the guide Michelin and has 18 points in the gault & millau gourmet guide.

Also top addresses are the Cesar Ritz (027/958 19 00) who serves daily a six course gourmet dinner, the Vernissage that offers creative herb specialties together with excellent wines, and the Papalagi which are all situated at the Ferienart Resort Spa. The Gourmet Stübli Hohnegg (027/957 22 68) and the Saaserhof (027/958 98 98) a specialty restaurant are certainly worth a visit.

Saas Fee Hotels

The two best-rated hotels in Saas Fee Switzerland are the Ferienart Resort Spa and the Waldhotel Fletschhorn, the latter is more a 4-star+ hotel. Because of limited luxury accommodation possibilities, you may want to look at a good 4-star hotel or a chalet. For example, the Schweizerhof Gourmet & Spa, Flair & Golfhotel Saaserhof, or the Best Western Metropol Grand Hotel is a good choice.

How to get to Saas Fee Switzerland

Getting Here -- Take a train to Visp from all major Swiss cities. From there take a bus to the resort. Buses leave every hour from Brig or Visp. During peak in the winter, the buses leave more regularly.

If you are driving, the traveling time from Visp is approximately 40 minutes to the entrance of the village. Remember that this resort is car free, so you need to park your car in the parking lot at the entrance of the village.

Private or business jets can fly directly to Sion regional airport. From Sion, it takes only about one and a half hours by car or by taxi.

Note: Saas Fee Switzerland is a beautiful family resort and geared less to high-end guests.
