Choose Swiss Airlines When Planning Your Flights to Switzerland

No other air carrier represents Switzerland better than does Swiss Airlines. To you as a customer, this means such quintessential Swiss values as quality down to the finest detail and personal attention found in the typical Swiss hospitality.

Skytrax World Airline consistently features Swiss International Airlines in the top ten for their first, business and economy class travel. In 2009, our national carrier won the coveted Skytrax Award for "Best European Airline" for short- as well as long-haul flights. The survey is run annually by the British consulting company. More than 15 million airline passengers from 95 different countries participated and rated more than 160 airlines.

Swiss airlines was also awarded by Business Traveller Awards, Condé Nast Traveller Readers´ Awards as best airline of Europe for several years in a row.

After all this praise about our national airline, I also like to tell you that our national carrier is today owned by the German "Lufthansa". Our old airline was called "Swissair", but had to file for bankruptcy in October 2001 and grounded its entire fleet following the announcement.

For the Swiss people, it was a national tragedy that Swissair did not exist anymore. Years before, the managers speculated and bought up companies with their excess cash. However, today the new Swiss carrier is doing very well again.

Airbus A330-300 from Swiss Airlines

Despite its competition from other top carriers, Swiss Airlines understands its customer requirements. And it does not matter whether it is the luxury flights in First class, for travelers in Business class or simply the friendliness of the service provided in the Economy class.

The youthful Swiss fleet of 85 aircraft operates 53 medium- and short-haul and 24 long-haul aircraft types. Additionally, more aircrafts are also operated on behalf of Swiss under wet-lease agreements. They fly to 73 destinations in more than 39 countries.

Swiss carried 13.8 million passengers in 2009 and operate about 2,600 flights per week. The fleet currently comprises seven different kind of aircraft. The AIRBUS aircrafts A340, A330-300 and A330-200 are used for long-haul flights. For shorter flights, the AIRBUS A320 family (A319, A320, A321) and AVRO RJ100 aircrafts are operated.

All flights to Switzerland either depart or arrive from Zurich International Airport, the main hub of Swiss International Airlines, Geneva International Airport, and Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg Airport..

There are regular scheduled airline flights to Zurich from major cities in England such as London, Manchester and Birmingham. Flights to Zurich are also often used as feeder flights for long-haul routes with Swiss Airlines. For this reason, the range of flights to Zurich from London is extensive. Most International flights either from Europe, North America or Asia and Africa arrive at Zurich International Airport.

The second most frequent used airport in Switzerland is Geneva International Airport. Next to Swiss Airlines, the Geneva airport is also served by more than 60 airlines. Like the International Airport in Zurich, there are regular scheduled airline flights to Geneva from over 100 cities. Additionally, many charter flights from Geneva leave daily for the European beach resorts. The Geneva International Airport has also strong traffic from Private Jet Charter companies, especially in the winter time.

The Euro airport of Basel-Mulhouse sits at the crossroads of Europe and is within easy each of several major Swiss cities, France and Germany. Just lately, Swiss has pulled back on their regional flights there. However, there are still several daily flights to Basel from London Heathrow (British Airways) and London City (Swiss).

Swiss also serves the small airport of Lugano, although some of the flights are operated by a codeshare partner airline. But, there are no flights to Bern. However, Lufthansa and LOT have flights from/to Munich and Darwin Airline has regular flight from/to London.

So, the next time you are planning to take a vacation in Switzerland, think about booking with Swiss Airlines.
