Swiss Castles – Architectural Master Achievements Waiting To be Inhabited

Many Swiss castles, noble houses and domains were once inhabited by the upper class. And despite being a small country, Switzerland boasts one of the richest landscapes of Europe for historic buildings and its many castles. These buildings are really architectural jewels and most were built between the 10th and the 13th century and a few even date back to the 9th century.

Of course, there were many Swiss castles built only two hundred years ago. Some of them even became copies of residences by the European aristocracy.

The castle of Trachselwald
The number of castles sold worldwide is miniscule compared to the overall real estate market.

However, it has increased in recent years, thanks to the rising wealth of buyers and general enthusiasm for real estate.

There are more than 4000 features like varied fortresses, stately homes and castles dating from prehistoric times to the present day.

However, only about 600 castles in Switzerland are well preserved. Around 130 of those historical buildings are already in private hands. Like the castles Mammertshofen (TG) and Rietberg (GR) which are inhabited by a famous family and by a Swiss politician.

The family "von Salis" owns the castle Brunegg located in the Canton of Aargau. A Bernese newspaper szar resides at the castle "Worb". And the castle "Tarasp", which is on sale right now belongs to a German prince gender.

Monetary nobility instead of blood nobility

The Castle of Oberhofen
The old walls drew quite early also young money. It began back in the 19th and 20th century when industrialists, bankers and enterprisers bought some of the beautiful medieval Swiss castles.

For example, a Munich finance dynasty moved the family seat to the castle of "Weinfelden".

A wealthy entrepreneur acquired the castle Eugensberg located in the Canton of Thurgau. And another well-known person bought three castles in the Canton of Grison.

The monetary nobility has come to the taste. In wealthy circles, it is chic these days to buy yourself one of the Swiss castles on offer. The cantons and communities have noticed that selling them brings in money without the hassle to maintain them.

Some municipalities will greet you as a good taxpayer rather than encumbering themselves with an old castle – in hope that you remain a good taxpayer because castles are expensive on maintenance. However, foreign nationals may qualify under the lump sum tax, thus paying very little taxes.

That is why an Austrian entrepreneur bought the castle "Sonnenberg" from the cloister of Einsiedeln. Also to the new castle owners belongs an English couple, who owns the castle Hüttwilen. And the list goes on and on…

Alone the Canton of Bern has 14 castles and other historical buildings on offer. And there are other cantons in Switzerland that also offer beautiful castles that are a part of history.Click here to find out more about what castles are for sale in Switzerland.

However, buying one of those Swiss castles is not something for everybody. It is definitely not for speculators, but rather for somebody who has joy and identifies himself with the property. Most of the time, they are wealthy clients who have a passion for outstanding estates. Someone that is permanently looking to combine passion and wise wealth management by an exceptional property in a sought-after region in Switzerland.

Most want to avoid publicity and are in search for discretion. Other prospective buyers are companies, endowments and private individuals from foreign countries as well as from Switzerland.

You should also make sure that you do not see Swiss castles as just another investment and adapt it according to your wishes – with a swimming pool, fitness centre, big windows, garages or an elevator.

This may be a bit difficult to realize when you have become the proud owner of a thousand year old castle. Besides, approval for these add-ons may not be that simple anyway. Castles in Switzerland are rarely advertised and usually sold directly through the town hall or a local contact.
