Flims Laax Falera - The Mecca For Snowboarders
The Flims Laax Falera ski resort is situated a little more than an hour from Zurich International airport. In spite of its closeness from Zurich Switzerland, 70% of the pistes are located at more than 2,000 m (6,562 feet) above sea level. The highest point of this big ski area of more than 220 km (136 miles) of slopes lies actually above 3,018 m (9,902 feet). This has also the advantage that there is plenty of snow available for unlimited ski fun during the whole season. The resort, a so-called Alpine arena is connecting the three villages of Flims, Laax and Falera. All are located in the Rhaeto-Romanic linguistic and cultural region of the Canton of Grisons. Each of the three villages is specializing in a particular group of guests. The resort of Flims Laax Falera does not have the prominence that has Davos Switzerland or St Moritz.
Laax attracts especially snowboarders from everywhere in the world to its superb ski pistes. Falera, the smallest of the three has still maintained its charm of a mountain village. It is a quiet and sunny place and excellent for a family vacation. Flims has an extensive network of hiking trails, for cross-country skiers, and for winter hikers. There are also a number of wellness hotels in this village.
The ski region of this large Alpine area maintains pistes for all grades and levels. The Vorab glacier reaches a height of 3,018 m is the highest point in the ski area. Over the last decade, Flims Laax Falera has become the Mecca for snowboarders thanks to the professional snowboard freestyle academy.
Moreover, where there are snowboarders, there are countless après-ski activities for young people with long parties. Of course, there are many more winter sports besides Alpine skiing, snowboarding, or carving like for example curling, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, paragliding, or winter hiking.
In the summer, more than 250 km (156 miles) of hiking trails and over 220 km (136 miles) of mountain bike trails are available to discover the beautiful countryside. Besides biking and hiking, there is golf, badminton, or tennis.
Nightlife
Bars & Clubs
The nightlife is not as high-end as it is in Zermatt Switzerland or Gstaad because most of the bars cater mostly to the younger crowd. The Casa Veglia Bar in Laax has a somewhat older society and is certainly a bit more sedate. Heading down to the basement, you enter into the Rider's Palace and usually find the younger crowd. Good après-ski for the younger set has the Legna Bar in Flims. Right beside it is the Iglu Bar that is probably the best meeting spot for snowboarders and skiers alike. Also visited much by snowboarders is the Granite Bar as well as the Crap Bar.
Restaurants Try the restaurant La Cena (081 928 48 48) which is located at the Park Hotel Waldhaus. GaultMillau honored the ingenious-Mediterranean cuisine with 16 points. There are more fine restaurants in the Park Hotel, like the restaurant Panorama, which serves French food; the restaurant Little China, Asian food; and the restaurant Pomodoro, pizza, and pasta specialties. In the wintertime, you can have Fondue variations (Swiss cheese specialties) in the restaurant IL Tschaler and the Lounge has mostly light menus in the evening. Most certainly, worth a visit is also in the restaurant Barga with Chef Ralph Curanz. Michelin rated the restaurants Fidazerhof with its rich tradition as one of the best restaurants. Both gourmet restaurants are located in Flims-Waldhaus. The cozy restaurant Larnags is a truly unique experience and situated only a 15-minute walk from the base ski station in Laax, Murschetg. For typical Swiss food like "Geschnetzeltes with Roesti" go to the Poestli. Just make sure you reserve a table in the "Stuebli" as there are only four tables in this cozy room. The food and atmosphere are a delight, but the service is sometimes a bit slow and not that friendly.
Hotels in Flims In the largest hotel-park of Switzerland lies the unique Park Hotel Waldhaus (081 928 48 48) with four guesthouses. This luxury hotel is located on a beautiful hillside between Flims Dorf and Laax. Especially attractive and an architectural masterpiece is the clear glass cube that houses the excellent wellness and beauty centre. While vacationing here, you still discover a sophisticated atmosphere of the Belle Époque but also the art and culture. A good 4-star hotel and located in Flims is the Hotel Adula (081 928 28 28) with its first-class wellness area "La Mira". The hotel is family operated and the prizes for a double room start at Swiss francs 250.- or a junior suite from 370 francs. Other 4-star hotels that I recommend is the Hotel Laaxerhof (081 920 82 00) and the Hotel Signina (081 927 90 01) both located in Laax, and the Sunstar Hotel Survelva (081 928 18 00) as well as the Romantik Hotel Schweizerhof (081 928 10 10) both located in Flims Waldhaus.
